Werkgevers NAVO-landen presenteren ambitieverklaring voor versterken defensie-industrie

Tijdens het NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum in Den Haag hebben vertegenwoordigers van BusinessEurope, de Canadian Chamber of Commerce, de U.S. Chamber of Commerce en VNO-NCW hun steun uitgesproken voor de uitvoering van NAVO’s plannen om de defensie-industrie te versterken. De gezamenlijke ambitieverklaring werd vanmiddag door VNO-NCW voorzitter Ingrid Thijssen overhandigd aan NAVO-secretaris-generaal Mark Rutte.

Unieke samenwerking

Dat de 32 werkgeversorganisaties in de NAVO-landen, vertegenwoordigd door de vier ondertekenaars VNO-NCW, Business Europe, de Canadian Chamber of Commerce en de U.S. Chamber of Commerce, gezamenlijk optrekken is uniek. Het onderstreept het belang van een krachtige industriële basis als fundament voor de veiligheid van het bondgenootschap. Ondernemingen uit NAVO-landen willen gezamenlijk bijdragen aan voldoende productiecapaciteit, technologische innovatie en versterking van toeleveringsketens. Zij faciliteren hiermee hun overheden die zo landen beter kunnen inspelen op een snel veranderend veiligheidslandschap.

Weerbare economie essentieel voor afschrikking en verdediging

Volgens de organisaties is een sterke en weerbare economie essentieel voor effectieve afschrikking en verdediging. In de verklaring spreken zij hun bereidheid uit om te investeren in kritieke technologieën en pleiten zij voor intensievere samenwerking op het gebied van onderzoek en ontwikkeling, standaardisatie en interoperabiliteit. Ook vragen zij om meer transparantie over toekomstige capaciteitsbehoeften. Nauwe publiek-private samenwerking is daarbij cruciaal, met actieve betrokkenheid van zowel grote bedrijven als het mkb en innovatieve start-ups, om de technologische voorsprong en paraatheid van de NAVO te waarborgen.

 

Ingrid Thijssen, President, VNO-NCW: “After decades of peace, NATO and its Allies face a fundamentally changed security landscape. The safety of our societies and the resilience of our economies can no longer be taken for granted. Deterrence and defence demand not just military strength, but a strong industrial base. Today, the NATO business community fully pledges its support to expanding industrial capacity — from innovation and technological leadership to resilient supply chains, public-private partnerships, and workforce development.”

Fredrik Persson, BusinessEurope President: “Increasing conflicts are challenging the established global order and generating more security and economic risks. NATO’s role as a guarantor of our shared security and defence is more important than ever. A strong industrial base in NATO countries is key to further develop joint security and defence capabilities and to sustain our economic growth and competitiveness. The business community stands ready to step up efforts and actively engage in public-private partnerships to further drive investment, innovation and efficiency in defence production. A collaborative approach between established defence contractors, SMEs and emerging start-ups will enable better and faster solutions to evolving defence needs.”
